How It Works
Monday through Thursday mornings online, by grade band. Band A meets two mornings a week, Bands B through D meet three to four mornings, two to two and a half hours with movement breaks built in.
Practice assignments set by YLA, completed at home under parent direction, and reviewed together the following Monday.
Weekly mastery checks, a written progress report every quarter, a parent conference every quarter, and a student portfolio ready for the annual home education evaluation and PEP records.
Curriculum
| Class | What students learn |
|---|---|
| Reading and English Language Arts | Fluency, comprehension, writing in three modes, grammar in use, and a novel study every year. |
| Cursive Handwriting | Letter families, joins, a fluent personal signature, and full page cursive writing, Grades 2 to 5 core. |
| Mathematics | Number sense through pre algebra, with mastery checks and retakes until the skill holds. |
| Science | Life, earth, and physical science with a home lab in every unit using ordinary household materials. |
| Social Studies | Geography, United States history, civics, and world study by grade band. |
| Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship | The YLA signature subject. Earning, saving, budgeting, banking, credit in plain language, pricing, and a student business pitch. |
| Technology and Media Skills | Typing, documents, spreadsheets, research with source checking, digital citizenship, and coding. |
| Wellness and Physical Education | Daily movement, flexibility, strength, youth sports skills, nutrition, and Dodgeball and Team Games under clear safety rules. |
| Art and Creative Expression | Drawing, design, music appreciation, storytelling, and a gallery project each quarter. |
| Home Economics | Running a home, meal planning on a budget, sewing and clothing care, and a quarterly home project. |
| Public Speaking | Every student presents live every quarter. Older students finish with a memorized speech and a business pitch. |
| Spanish | Conversation first, then reading and writing, with live conversation checks each quarter. |
| American Sign Language | Alphabet and home signs up to full conversational signing, with Deaf culture taught as part of the skill. |
| Music | Rhythm and singing for young students, piano or guitar foundations from Grade 3, and a recital each semester. |
| Chess and Critical Thinking | Tactics, notation, game analysis, and a quarterly class tournament. |
| Gardening | Every student grows real food or herbs at home, with a garden journal and a harvest record. |
Electives run in nine week quarter terms. Families add one or more, and every elective carries its own grade band and safety rules in the full curriculum packet, available on request.
| Elective | What students learn |
|---|---|
| Culinary Arts | Grades 1 to 8 by band. Kitchen safety, cooking skills, meal planning, and food costing. A parent is present for every heat and knife unit. |
| Shop Class | Grades 3 to 8. Measurement, hand tools, fasteners, simple home repairs, and a yearly build project under shop safety rules. |
| Woodshop | Grades 4 to 8. Hand tool woodworking first, planned projects with cut lists, and a self designed final project. |
| Engineering | Grades 1 to 8. Design, build, test, improve, with an engineering notebook and a design defense each semester. |
| Mechanics | Theory from Grade 3, hands on from Grade 5. Engines, vehicle systems, inspections, and maintenance logs. Repair level work happens only at supervised in person lab days. |
| Agriculture and FFA Readiness | Plant and animal science, food systems, and a year long supervised agricultural project with a project book. YLA teaches agriculture education and FFA readiness and does not claim to be an official FFA chapter, since official membership runs through a chartered chapter. |
| Sailing | Seamanship theory online: parts of the boat, points of sail, weather, knots, and safety. Time on the water is offered only as an optional lab day under a qualified sailing instructor. |
| Creator Technology | Grades 4 to 8. Video, podcasting, design, and coding projects, with publishing always parent controlled. |
| Reading Lab and Study Skills | Small groups of six or fewer. Reading recovery, fluency, comprehension strategies, organization, and study systems, with reading growth measured every quarter. |
